Sophomore Luke Costello homered for the fourth time in the last three games.
Sophomore outfielder Luke Costello homered for the fourth time in the last three games. Of his 30 at-bats this season, Costello has left the yard seven times (23.3 percent). Since the start of the Stanford series, the Erie, Pa., native has driven in 12 runs while going 6-for-14 (.429) at the plate with seven runs scored.
Junior Javar Williams picked up his team-leading 11th multi-hit performance of the season, with a single through the right side in the fifth, an RBI single to short in the sixth and a single to center in the eighth. Williams has recorded at least two hits in each of the last four games, going 11-for-17 (.647) out of the leadoff spot for the Demon Deacons.
Starting on short rest after tossing a scoreless ninth against Stanford on Sunday, sophomore righty Cameron Bagwell was effective over 4.2 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with a trio of strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Right-hander Cameron Bagwell tossed a 1-2-3 first to keep the game 0-0 after the opening frame.
- In the top of the second, the Deacs got the first runner of the game with Luke Costello reaching on a leadoff walk and later in the inning, Jimmy Keenan was hit by a pitch, but the Demon Deacons were unable to push the first run of the game home.
- A two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the second got Coastal Carolina on the board first.
- The Chanticleers took a 2-0 lead into the third.
- The Deacs again applied pressure, getting two runners on in the top of the third but couldn't get their first run of the game.
- Bagwell kept the game at 2-0 after three innings, working out of trouble after the first two batters reached.
- He induced a key double play for the first two outs and followed that up with another groundout to get out of the inning.
- The Deacs struck in the top of the fourth to cut into the deficit.
- Costello reached on a four-pitch walk and Matt Conte singled to left to put the first two runners of the inning on.
- Jackson Miller kept the train moving with a single through the right side to load the bases with no outs.
- Blake Schaaf drove home the first Wake Forest run of the game, as his groundout to first brought home Costello from third.
- Bagwell kept it a 2-1 deficit after pitching a clean fourth inning.
- The Deacs took the lead in the top of the fifth.
- Costello remained hot, homering to left with two outs to give the Deacs a 3-2 lead.
- After Bagwell got the first two outs of the fifth, the Demon Deacons turned to lefthander Rhys Bowie out of the bullpen.
- Bowie stranded the runner at second, striking out the only batter he faced in the inning to preserve the Deacs' lead.
- Wake Forest added to the lead when Javar Williams singled to the left side to score Schaaf from third.
- The Deacs took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth.
- Coastal scored seven runs in the bottom half to retake a 9-4 lead.
- Despite getting two runners on, the Deacs were held scoreless in the top of the seventh.
- Coastal Carolina added to the lead in the seventh, pushing the game to 10-4.
- The Deacs left two runners in scoring position without pushing a run across in the eighth.
- Freshman arms Ryan Bosch and Marcelo Harsch combined to toss a scoreless bottom of the eighth.
- Wake Forest fell, 10-4.
"Obviously, we didn't play good baseball today, too many free passes. We had the game right where we wanted it. We had a two-run lead there with the right bullpen guys ready. We've got to close that game out against a good team. We had opportunities and we went out there in the sixth inning and gave up a big inning that started with free passes. Give Coastal credit, they found some green in the outfield. They didn't hit the ball particularly hard that inning, other than the homer. But give them credit, they executed when they needed to execute, and we just didn't throw enough strikes. We've got to find a way to run the bases better. We threw away some opportunities with base running and some situational at-bats. We could have had probably a five to six run lead at that point, and it might have been a different story. We had it where we wanted, and we just didn't get it done out of the bullpen today. We've got to be ready to go on Friday." - head coach Tom Walter
